![Immigrants have played a key role in America’s folk art, both as creators and collectors. Israel Litwak (1867-1960) was born in Odessa, Russia, was a cabinetmaker, and immigrated to the US in 1903 and settled in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. After retirement, he started to paint and soon enough he had a one-man show at the Brooklyn Museum in 1939 and was included in Sidney Janis’s book, They Taught Themselves.

With America now at 250, Powers / Lowenfels presents Folk Art USA: Coast to Coast.
